Management of excavated soil from a polluted site in Fribourg – Switzerland

Management of excavated soil from a polluted site in Fribourg – Switzerland

Environmental Engineering (Excavation material management)

  • Client: Metallwerke refonda AG
  • Project manager: Geos Consulting engineers
  • Completion date: 2012-2013
  • Cost of depollution: 6,800 kCHF

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS

Over a century, this former urban industrial site housed various industrial activities including workshops for maintenance of railway equipment, foundry, aluminum can manufacturing plant and tertiary sector. Its redevelopment in progress in Fribourg hyper-center presented constraints related to the urban and railway traffic as well as the residential environment. In addition, the legacy of pollution in land, including the presence of significant concentration of perchlorethylene (PER), must be managed.

ASSIGNMENT

Development and implementation of an environmental quality control plan including the following aspects:

1) Real time sorting of excavated material according to their degree of contamination;

2) Orientation of excavated material by daily sampling and in-situ controls;

3) Selection of the treatement circuit according to the applying regulation, ie treatment by thermal desorption or evacuation in adapted landfill;

4) Quality control of air emissions, quality control of the underground water.

EHS compliance audits in Switzerland and abroad

EHS compliance audits in Switzerland and abroad

Environmental Engineering (EHS audits)

  • Client: Industries, real estate agencies, funding agencies and private sector

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS

The purpose of environmental and health safety audit is to verify whether one or more activities comply with legal requirements for environmental protection. The framework used includes all the laws, directives, ordinances, decrees issued by a country and international treaties.

The compliance audit can be requested by a company which wishes to buy a facility or by a financing group that is solicited for a loan related to a transfer of ownership. It may be required by a parent company to upgrade its subsidiaries or recent acquisitions on the basis of its own standards.

ASSIGNMENT

Geos provides:

  • EHS regulatory watch in Switzerland in order to assess regulation compliance;
  • Site visits and interviews with key site personnel;
  • Reports which highlight the gap between actual practices and legal obligations.

Asbestos diagnosis of a building stock – Switzerland

Asbestos diagnosis of a building stock – Switzerland

Environmental Engineering (Quality control of existing buildings)

  • Client: Vaudoise Assurances – Real Estate Investment Division
  • Completion date: 2010 – 2016

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS

Following the evolution of the regulations, Vaudoise Assurance wished to have knowledge on the presence of asbestos on its entire property portfolio in French-speaking Switzerland.

ASSIGNMENT

As a specialized agent for Vaudoise Assurances, GEOS conducted the asbestos assessment of 68 residential, administrative and commercial buildings.

GEOS then managed asbestos removal works, organized and monitored renovations of these buildings.

Microtunnel boring machine Le Corbusier / Channeling EC Ø1500 – Switzerland

Microtunnel boring machine Le Corbusier / Channeling EC Ø1500 – Switzerland

Tunnels and underground constructions

  • General Contractor: City of Geneva – Civil Engineering Department
  • Assignment: Project Management
  • Total cost of work: 4,500k CHF
  • Total cost of the assignment: 250,000k CHF
  • Completion Date: 2013-2015

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND CHARACTERISTICS

The project involves construction of the last section of the high-capacity inter-communal transport gallery (Ø150 cm), allowing for collection of rainwater from the Florissant-La Garance watershed in the district of Malagnou: section Rue Le Corbusier – Chemin de The Boisserette – Chemin de la Chevillarde.

Given the high depth of the collector (4 to 9 meters deep) and the presence of poor quality groundwater (silts and clays not consolidated or even fluent), the study of the project resulted in adoption of a trenchless excavation method and the use of a microtunnel boring machine with maintenance of the confinement head with bentonite pressure.

This technique is the most suitable solution from a technical and economic point of view, making it possible in particular to reduce significantly the impact of surface works (construction site noise, volume of earthworks, trees felling, and traffic).

The main constraints of the project were:

  • Works in a public urban and private residential context, on which the impacts of the construction site at all levels are to be limited.
  • Realization of the firing and reception cells of the microtunnel boring machine, of the drop wells, and the installation of site installations mainly on limited areas with landscaping and equipment to be protected or restored after work.
  • Groundwater deformable sites, with existing buildings nearby, and low tolerances of deviation from the altimetry plot.

Technical characteristics

  • Demolition works
  • Sheet piling (1100m²)
  • Jetting columns Ø800 soil improvement (1800ml)
  • Hydraulic connection of the collector Ø1500 to the microtunnel boring machine: 250ml (first firing); 165ml (second shot in curve, radius of curvature 1500m).
  • Collector Ø1400 in open trench 4-6m deep (20m)
  • Reinforced concrete chambers, 8m deep: concrete (400m³) Armature (56T)
  • 2 private connections Ø250 per directional drilling (20m)
  • Pavement repairs

ASSIGNMENT

As a civil and geotechnical engineering firm, GEOS has carried out a project management mission comprising the following tasks/duties:

  • Invitation to tender,
  • Execution project,
  • Construction management,
  • Commissioning and completion.
